What was the purpose of this week of investigations and video watching?
The Purpose of this weeks investigations and video watching was to teach us that we can all do the math we are learning in this class and that groups that work together are more successful than groups who do not understand how to work with each other and not against each other.
Give an overview of all the activities and videos.
This week we did 4 activities in class and we watched multiple videos. The activities we did include Tiling a 11x13 rectangle, squares to stairs, Hailstone Sequence, and the Painted cube. These four activities taught us how to work with our partners, showed us we could do problems if we really tried, and challenged us to try harder. When we were Tiling a 11x13 square we had to fit the least amount of squares into the rectangle and we started with a lot of squares in this rectangle but we figured out that the least amount of squares we could fit in a rectangle would be 6. The next activity we did was squares to stairs, in this activity we had to figure out a pattern of the squares in a staircase. The hailstone sequence was very confusing to me at first but I slowly understood. We started with any number we wanted and we had to continuously take half of that number unless the number was odd if it was odd we multiplied by 3 and added 1 until we got to 1. The final activity we did was the painted cube, and we took 27 sugar cubes and figured out how many squares had 3 sides covered, 2 sides covered, and 1 side covered.
Choose two messages from any of the five videos we watched. Explain the personal significance of those two messages.
One of the messages I learned was that every time you fail on a math problem, your brain grows bigger. The second message I learned was that no matter what kind of brain you have you can be good at math. The second message is more significant to me than the first in that it says that no matter what kind of brain you have, you can be good at math and I am not the most logical I am more creative, and this is really nice to know I will be able to do the math. I do not get my math problems right first try usually and if my brain grows every time I fail then I will be very good at this math.
Provide a write-up of the problem you choose to extend.
We started with any number we wanted and we had to continuously take half of that number unless the number was odd if it was odd we multiplied by 3 and added 1 until we got to 1. I chose to expand on this problem because there were things very clear to me I could change. I also understood the hailstone sequence better than I understood the others. I was able to change the multiplying by 3 to multiplying by 1 and then adding 1. I had no troubles with multiplying one and adding one.
A reflection of your work and effort during the Week of Inspirational Math: how will this week inform your effort and participation in math for the rest of the year.
This week was a very interesting week for me in that we had to learn to work as a group. We learned some very important messages from the videos we watched daily, and I learned a lot and grew my brain a lot just in this week of math and I enjoyed this week. This excites me for the rest of the year of math, and the rest of the math classes I will be taking at high tech high.
